Being a new mom is a very happy time, but it’s also very overwhelming. There’s a lot to learn, and at times it can be stressful, tiring and lonely. It’s times like these when you really get to know who your friends are and who’s going to stay in your life now that the baby is here. Showing a new mom that you care is important, and being there to help in any way you can will mean more than you’ll ever know.

Know a new mum who needs a helping hand? Here are just some of the ways you can help the new mom in your life.

Pick up the phone

When a new mom comes home with baby, there’ll be a period of adjustment as they try and settle into a routine, as well as enjoy spending time together. While it might be early for a visit, it doesn’t hurt to pick up the phone and see how she’s doing. As a nice distraction while breastfeeding, or the chance to share some of her struggles or frustrations, it’s good to have a friendly voice at the end of the phone. Just call and ask how she’s doing and let her do the talking, it’s important that you’re there to listen to her and help her feel better. You can save the motherhood tips for further down the line when she’s feeling more settled!

Spend time with her

A lot of new moms can feel like they’re stuck in the house. And while it’s lovely to spend so much time with the baby, it could start getting pretty lonely. So why not go over there and keep her company? Taking round some food or a much-needed coffee could do her a world of good. It’s also good to get her out of the house. Go for lunch or for a stroll with her and the baby – just because she’s had a baby doesn’t mean that she needs to be housebound. Take a look at fun things you can do with the baby and enjoy spending some quality time together.

Buy her gifts she will get use out of

New moms are usually showered with all kinds of gifts both while they’re pregnant and after they’ve had the baby, but there are a lot of things that are either ‘nice to have’ or can’t be used until the baby is older. Think of some newborn gift ideas that she’ll get a lot of use out of, including things like a changing bag or even a baby monitor. If you’re struggling for some ideas of things to buy, you could always ask if there’s anything she really needs.

You can also buy some useful gifts that are just for mum! From paying for her hair appointment to some pampering gifts, it’s nice to treat a mom who’s not got much time for herself these days!

Offer to babysit

Many new mothers are afraid to ask for someone to babysit, even if it’s just for a couple of hours. Why not offer to give her some time to herself? Especially at the beginning where she’s exhausted. Having you watch the baby for a bit can help her get to run some errands or do some chores – things she might not have been able to do up until now. Even if you just go round her place to help her sleep for a few hours, it will be a very welcome offer.

Help her even when she doesn’t ask

Most new moms will resist the urge to ask for help, even when they really need it. There are some simple things you can do for a new mom, including taking her some food, doing some laundry and helping her clean up a bit. Don’t assume that because she’s not asking, she doesn’t need help in some way. Sometimes it takes a bit of gentle nudging, but she’ll soon think of ways you can help out. When you’re a mom yourself, you’ll know some of the little ways your help can be valuable so just do them – she’ll be too tired to argue!

Being a new mom brings a lot of changes into someone’s life, but that doesn’t mean friendships have to change. While her priorities are a little different right now, your relationship will stay the same, and she’ll be grateful you were by her side when all of these new experiences were happening. Be there for the new mom in your life, it will mean the world to her.
