We were looking forward to our first vacation with our little pumpkin. Little did we know what we had in store for us. Who knew vacationing with a baby was so much work! Spoiler alert, I would do it all over again if I had a choice 🙂
We decided to take it easy and drive down to Michigan for our first week long vacation with the grandparents. I made a list of everything we needed to take. When Jeremy and I vacationed we would each take a large bag. After I was done with the list we needed for Chloe, Jeremy and I had to share a medium bag and Chloe got the large bag! That should have been my first clue of what we were getting ourselves into!
The drive was fairly uneventful. We were excited. She only screamed the last 10 min. Not too bad we thought. When we got to the house it was early afternoon. She had already exploded from her diaper. So I got to it, quickly changed her diaper and her clothes. We played for a bit, I fed her and then started to get her ready for bedtime. I laid her down and she immediately started screaming. She did not recognize the room and she hated it. She hated it so much we had to move to the basement where it was pitch dark and she could not see a thing! So there we slept for our week long vacation!
The first day, we got up and tried to get ready for the beach. But by the time we were ready she was ready for a nap. When she got up from her nap, she was hungry. By the time we did the entire song and dance there was no parking at the beach! So we inflated the kiddie pool and played in the back yard.
Day two we set our expectations right. Grandparents when to the beach earlier. We took our time and then walked over when everything was done. We spent about 2 hours at the beach. We had a ton of fun. She wasn’t entirely sure about the sand at first but then seemed to take to it. Once we got home she was so tired she cried and cried and cried.
Day three we decided no beach, let’s just do brunch. That went fabulously. She was happy, she loved sitting at the table in her high chair. Enjoyed the drive. We finally felt like we had a parenting-vacation win! Phew!
Then she fell sick 🙁 The stomach bug and a cold! Needless to say the next two nights did not go well. The days were ok. We went for walks and tried to keep her out of the sun. My little hot pot gets extra grumpy in the sun!
We finally gave up and decided to drive home a day early while she was in a fairly good mood despite being sick. She slept most of the way which was great.
Oh, did I mention that I had mastitis through the entire vacation and just thought I was being a weakling because my breast hurt! Well, I finally gave in and went to the doctor and was diagnosed. Who knew you could get mastitis without a block! Ugh!
Anyway, we came back with a lot of memories and more tired than when we left but I wouldn’t change it for anything in the world. We got to spend an entire 7 days we our baby girl and it was the best!
What Did We Learn
- Broad plans are good, planning by the hour does not work. If you want you can make a plan, write it up and then rip it! Little humans have their own plans and very often they win!
- Make sure the bedrooms have black out curtains! Really important.
- Always take the Nosefrida and a thermometer, you never know when they can get a cold.
- Most importantly take lots of pictures 🙂
