I have been told many times that I look preppy. To be honest with you, I never knew what that meant. So I started googling the term to understand what it was all about. When I saw the pictures of outfits associated with the word and the definitions, I completely agreed with that assessment of my style! I dress preppy, not always, but quite a bit. I will own it! Now I want to share my tips with all of you 🙂

Pick the Right Pieces

Preppy looks are based on some very basic, classic clothing items. Looking preppy is all about having these pieces:

  • Cardigans and shift dresses are the timeless pieces you must have. These two pieces will help you prep up any look!
  • Anything with a collar. I swear collar and preppy are synonymous! Polo shirts, blazers, particularly if they are navy.
  • And finally sweaters. These are especially key when constructing your fall and winter preppy looks

Pay Attention to the Colors

Colors are key when pulling together the preppy look. Stick to the classic colors: white, navy, green and red. Think a nautical look. You can choose a wide range of shades from that color family. If you stick to that family as the main color scheme in your look, then match the other pieces in your outfit to complete the look. You can get tips from this post on how to mix and match colors – Styling Tips | Color Combinations

It’s all About the Pattern

Patterns are always important. I’m sure you’ve seen all my posts on plaid lately. Well guess what? Plaid is the preppiest pattern of all! Other classic preppy patterns are gingham and tweed. There are so many ways to mix these patterns with some bold, monochrome clothing items. Like a gingham shirt with a lovely bold red skirt for example!

Simplicity is Key

Now that you have read about the color scheme and the patterns, make sure you stick to it. Solid colors and defined patterns are a particular must for a preppy look. It is also important to note that a preppy look is about being proper and conservative. So stick to clothes that are less revealing as well. Don’t go overboard with accessories. Be classic and simple!

Accessories That Say Preppy

There are certain accessories that scream preppy. Incorporating them in your look usually goes a long way to nailing it! I say usually because you don’t have to incorporate them, use your best judgement! That being said, the preppy accessories are:

  • A pair of classic sunglasses à la Audrey Hepburn
  • A beautiful pearl necklace is another classic piece
  • A watch
  • Headbands
  • A Hat
  • Loafers, Nude Pumps, Boots, Booties

Never Break Two Rules

All the blogs out these will tell you the same thing, but I will repeat for the sake of completeness. Don’t break these 2 rules:

  • Loafers are not to be worn with socks! Period!
  • Color is important! Wear some color in your look.
