Styling a Casual Winter Look

I love the cool weather mostly because I love layering! I feel like layering allows us to exercise our creative side with mixing and matching prints and allows me to incorporate my signature pops of color all at the same time! Check out my tips to styling a casual winter look.

We are in Williamsburg this weekend. It’s cold but not as cold as Chicago. Thank god 🙂 I took this wonderful opportunity to go coatless in the sun!

A Different Take on Layering

Layering doesn’t always need to be obvious. What do I mean by that?! Well let’s look at what I am wearing. I have a strap cami under my sweater. Then I have layered the lovely plaid blanket scarf over my sweater. That’s three layers but it sure doesn’t look it! I also have a pair of tights under my jeans. So that’s two layers while it seems like one! I love layering in new and creative ways.

Mixing Prints

I do plan to write an entire post on mixing prints to style your outfit, so stay tuned for that! But for now here is one tip! When mixing prints, have one bold print that you ground your look in. For my bold print I have picked my black and white striped J.Crew sweater. Now for the different print, I have gone in for a colorful plaid scarf. The print on this one is more fluid and definitely not as bold. Which is why they play together so nicely!

Pops of Color

If you know me by now you know that I love my pops of color! I also love to base my color pop in the outfit itself. My scarf gave me this opportunity with the subtle hints of red it had in it. I picked out a red pair of booties and a red bag for my lovely pops of color!

Winter Accessories

Finally, my last tip, pick out some cool winter accessories! My picks were a beautiful plaid blanket scarf and a lovely woolen hat. You could choose a beanie, ear muffs, a woolen skinny scarf, mittens and the list can go on and on!

Cute outfit. I’m always afraid to mix patterns. I just don’t know how so I loved your tip about a bold pattern for the base and then something more fluid. Love the red booties.

Ahh I love this look. Needed this inspiration since I get stuck in a rut where I wear the same sweater and accessories. Mixing prints really changes up an entire outfit. LOOVE.
