Tips for Mixing Plaid and Stripes

Christmas is only five days away! Isn’t that crazy?! That got me thinking about what to wear for christmas dinner. Yes, I did think about all the yummy food too but you know me, what to wear was the first thought in my mind. I know dinner will be laid back and causal. So I thought about pulling together two of my favorite prints – plaid and stripes!

Let me tell you a secret, I absolutely love plaid in the winter season. Especially when it’s red. It gives me the holiday vibe. Plaid is a classic in my book and so are stripes. You can always mix classics together! Here are my tips on mixing plaid and stripes with ease!

Horizontal Stripes With a Mini

I am sure you have heard by now that horizontal stripes for the vertically challenged is a no-no! I love stripes and I am vertically challenged but I was determined to make them work! When wearing a horizontally striped top wear a mini skirt to go with it. Tuck your top into your skirt. This will reduce the area of the horizontal stripes and give you leg length solving your height problem!

Break Up the Patterns

When mixing two prints together putting a monochrome where the prints meet is always good to cause a gradual change. I have used a wide metal belt for this effect. A belt also helps accentuate your waist and that helps us petite humans get some definition!

Have At least One Matching Color

Want to make sure your outfit is easy on the eyes and not too busy? Then stick to simplicity in colors since you have two different patterns. Try going in for basic colors and always have one color match in both the prints. I have black matching in my skirt and my top. I have also kept the rest of the outfit to black with a neutral colored purse. Remember less is more when it comes to this look!

Similar Sizes

The other tip to keep in mind when mixing these two prints is to make sure that the two patterns are of similar sizes. If the stripes are wide then make sure the plaid pattern is big and broad too. Vice versa, if the stripes are narrow then the plaid should be narrow too. This helps make the two pieces look like they actually belong together and causes the look to appear less busy.

Wear Few Accessories

You’ve gone through all the trouble and ideation to mix your prints so beautifully, so why take the attention away from your outfit? Keep the focus on it by wearing very few accessories. If you overdo the accessories you could end up look like a hot mess! Now we don’t want that do we? I have only worn a gold cuff and a gold belt. Nothing more!

Christmas dinner outfits need to be about looking chic and being comfortable. At least that’s my opinion. This outfit will definitely give you both! It is also a great look for work or a casual party. With the look being so versatile I hope I have inspired you to create your own plaid and stripes outfit with these tips!
