Packing Tips for Consultants

As you all know, I am an IT consultant by day and a blogger in all my other time! But as a traveling consultant that loves fashion I have realized that packing light and looking fab are a tad bit hard sometimes. So I figured I would pull together some packing tips for consultants and make your lives easier! You definitely aren’t spoilt for choice when you live out of a 9 inches x 14 inches x 22 inches box that houses 4 days worth of stuff! So how do I do it? What are my essential pieces? Read on to find out more!

There are some items a traveling consultant like me will always have! I will break it down for you and I hope it is helpful. Here you go with the packing tips..

A Backpack

Trust me this one is the most important! If you’re a petite girl like me and have a laptop (which I am sure you do) then carrying a backpack makes life so much easier. I started out by carrying my lovely Louis Vuitton Never full GM handbag. With all the weight on one shoulder I started getting severe back and neck pain. Ugh! So then I decided to go in for a backpack. It was after much searching that I found one that is perfect for travel as well as the client site! It’s the Henri Bendel West 57th Travel Backpack. I love it! It’s sleek, made of leather, looks professional and has a laptop compartment. It even has an additional back pocket that can be unzipped so your bag can sit on top of your suitcase! Woohoo!

A Spinner Carry on

Well duh, you need a suitcase, but I have specified spinner suitcase! This one made my life as a petite girl easier! I used to have a nice Tumi suitcase but it had the traditional two wheels and so I would have to pull it. After running between flights and from one terminal to another, pulling this suitcase made my arms hurt. The suitcase was sometimes not that heavy but tiredness gets to you and then it feels like a 100 lbs! Being able to lightly push a suitcase is so much easier! A spinner is also really nice for in the flight when you are pushing it in the aisle, it fits when you turn it to its side! This makes a huge difference! My current fav suitcase is the Bluesmart carry on. I love that it has mobile charging ports built-in!

A Neutral Pair of Shoes

I usually carry one pair of shoes and wear one when I travel. That way I have two pairs 🙂 I tend to carry neutral colors because they look professional and they also pair with just about any color you decide to take! So you don’t have to worry too much about getting your color matching right! My go to pair right now is a pair of Tory Burch peep toe wedges (about 3 inches high). They are super comfortable for all day use. The pair I usually wear to commute needs to not cause the TSA security check alarm to beep! This pair is also from Tory Burch but they have only an inch heel! So they are much easier to walk fast in if I need to! Between these two pairs I have a good choice of shoes to pick from for my 4 days on the road!

A Layer

I usually get cold on the plane, I usually get cold in the office, I honestly don’t know why the air conditioning is always blasting everywhere I go! Anyway, the way I deal with it is to always have a layer. My go to is a trench coat in spring and summer and a winter jacket in fall and winter. My current fav is a sleeveless trench coat I bought from J.Crew. The best part about this trench coat is that it can also be worn as a dress! So that way I have two looks with just one piece! Now isn’t that just amazing, no wasted bag space!

A Skirt or Jeans or Pants

I say or here intentionally!  Sure, if I could I would take a skirt for one day, a pair of pants for another and jeans for the third but I don’t have that much space! So I usually carry a single pair of pants or a skirt. I also usually make it a point to travel in jeans. It’s just so much easier and much more comfortable. So that gives me a pair of jeans to play with during the week as well. I try to make certain that either the bottom is in a neutral color or all my tops are. Then you can mix and match between the pair of jeans and the other bottom piece you have! So basically you are carrying only 5 pieces of clothing for 4 days instead of possibly 8! You could also opt in for 4 dresses if that is your style. But you get way more options with separate pieces especially if you need to extend your trip!

Makeup Essentials

I can’t live without my makeup most especially for work. Another one of my packing tips –  always have a little make up bag to house all my must haves. Currently my make up bag has – Urban Decay Weightless Foundation, Mac powder, Naked 3 eye shadow palette, an urban decay lipstick,  Anastasia eyebrow pencil, Lancome waterproof mascara, Nars eyeliner, Urban Decay kohl and Mac blush. That’s all folks!

Classic Jewelry

Oh jewelry! I love my jewelry 🙂 But again, I travel only with a few pieces. I will usually have a pair of stud earrings, one long pearl necklace (my favorite one is from Ann Taylor) and one short necklace. If I feel like I might carry a bracelet. So really I try to carry pieces that will go well on just about anything!

Quick Wins

These are a few things that while you might not think of they will make a huge difference when you have them. I am just going to rattle off the list I always have on me in travel sized containers of course:

Hand Sanitizer

Perfume

Kleenex

Tide pen

Dryer sheets for when you feel like your shoes don’t smell as good! Stick a sheet in it 🙂

I love the backpack – functional and incredibly stylish! The sleeveless trench is fab, it looks great worn as a dress with the pearl necklace. Brilliant packing tips 🙂

I used to be a travelling IT consultant – They only send me out about once a month now.
My best tip would be to have a work suitcase at hand at all times. My work suitcase always had all the basics, for example toiletries and makeup. This suitcase needed clothes only. It made packing and travelling on short notice so much easier. I still pack light from years of consultancy #brilliantblogposts

I completely agree, just leave the basics in there and then all you need to do is add the clothes 🙂

That is the chicest little backpack I’ve ever seen! And you’re totally right that a heavy tote or cross-body messenger bag just isn’t sustainable in the long term. So I like that this backpack is practical AND stylish. It feels feminine and grown up, and those are not easy qualities to find in a backpack. I appreciate your tips for packing stylishly and your little must-have recommendations like hand sanitizer and Tide pens!
