Juggling A Full Time Job and Blogging!

I have been asked this question many times – “How do you balance life as a traveling consultant and still manage to blog?” So I figured I would share what I do and try to inspire anyone contemplating this very idea of juggling a full-time job and blogging!

When I started blogging close to three and a half years ago I had no idea what I was really getting into! Let me say that up front! My friend suggested I start blogging. I looked up a few blogs and found it interesting and so much fun. So I decided to try it out.

The Beginning

My beginnings were simple.

Travel Schedule

I travelled for work from Monday through Thursday. Worked remote on Friday. We worked from about 7:30 am to around 5:30 pm. Then we would fly back home Thursday night.

Picture Time

My husband would click a set or two on the weekends. This usually entailed me planning what I wanted to wear. Taking pictures on our balcony or maybe on the street. It wouldn’t take more than an hour or so.

I would then download all the pictures onto my laptop. Spend about 30 minutes picking out the best 7-10 pictures. I would do minor edits to the pictures and they were good to go. This would take me about an hour or so.

Blog Work

After that I would start writing out the post. My posts described my look and where I could wear the look. Writing the post along with my husband editing it would take about 2 hours.

Then I would post it, usually at the moment I was done with the post if it were the weekend or wait and post sometime in the week. After I posted it I spent about 30 minutes sharing it to a bunch of different channels.

Grand Total Effort

5 hours a week

Blog Performance

My blog stats would spike the day I posted something. It would then go down to about half that number the next day and then after that it would literally be maybe 10 views a day!

My Happiness Quotient

I was happy I started the blog. I was having fun, but I knew I would want more! At this point in time my blog was a little fledgling and my work as a consultant was going great!

The Need For a Little More

The beginning phase for me lasted about 6 months. Then I became more curious about how to improve. What could I do next? After all I knew there was a lot more I could do!

Travel Schedule

My travel schedule did not change. I was still doing the same 4 days on site fly back Thursday night and work remote on Friday.

Picture Time

After monitoring my stats I knew I had to post more. That meant more pictures. But I knew there were some weekends that I would feel like doing nothing. So I planned for a rainy day. Now we started doing pictures for an hour on Saturday and another hour or so on Sunday!

My time to pick out the best pictures increased to about an hour or so since I was doing 3 to 4 sets. Then I would edit the pictures but this took more like an hour an a half now.

Blog Work

This is honestly where I started putting more effort into my blog! I would get back to the hotel around 6pm from work. After that would do dinner, relax a bit but then research blogging strategy, social media, how to get more traffic etc etc from about 10pm until perhaps 1am or so. I did this at least twice a week when I was traveling.

This was about when I got accepted into my first affiliate program – Shopsense! I was beyond excited!

Now I started to space out my post writing. I would try and do two posts over the weekend and if I managed to do a 3rd during the week I would save it for posting at a later time. Depending on how many posts I did, it took me anywhere from 3 to 4 hours. The increase in time was not only because I had more posts, now I had affiliate links I needed to generate and add them to my post!

Grand Total Effort

13.5 hours to 14.5 hours a week

Blog Performance

My blog performance was getting much better. The peaks were still there when I posted but when I didn’t post the traffic still stayed at a decent level. More than 10 views a day!

My Happiness Quotient

I was enjoying my blog much more. My efforts were reaping some returns. I did get accepted into an affiliate program, woohoo! I was still having fun, though now I could sense I was doing much more, but it felt good! My work was also still going great as well 🙂

Picture Time

My research told me I needed some kick ass pics! This meant I increased the amount of time I spent on both having the pictures taken as well as editing them.

I still kept to taking 3 to 4 sets per weekend. But now I spent more time so I had a wider selection of photos to choose from. This basically meant we spent about 2 hours on Saturday and approximately the same on Sunday taking pictures.

I also learned of new photo editing tools to make my life easier. Between the editing and the sheer extra volume of pictures I had to choose from, my picture selection and editing time increased to about three and a half hours.

Blog Work

My research had yielded so much more insight into the world of blogging. I had joined several blogging groups, some I got accepted into others were just click and join. I finally got accepted into the Rewardstyle affiliate network, which was my goal when I started out with all the research! Also, my research showed me I needed to seriously up my Instagram game!

I still kept up with my research, I learned quickly that research never ends! I was now spending about an hour a day after work for this, so approximately 5 hours a week!

Between all of those activities and then writing of the actual blog post, I felt like my day was not long enough! I was now spending at least 7 hours between Instagram, the blogging groups, Rewardstyle and the actual blog post write up itself!

Another exciting milestone in this phase was the start of brand collaborations! I started doing several with a lot of success. That also meant additional research before writing a post, but all worth the time in my opinion!

Grand Total Effort

19.5 hours a week

Blog Performance

My blog was doing fairly well in comparison to where I started! I was getting brand collaborations, free clothes and paid to do events!

My Happiness Quotient

I was ecstatic!

Picture Time

After doing some research on pictures, I learned I could take pictures of myself by myself! I was very excited at this thought! So I started doing that. I also bought several backgrounds for my pictures to make them pop. Picture time now slightly increased because of the set up needed before I could start taking pictures. But I loved the independence! I now spent about 7 hours over the weekend taking pictures.

Blog Work

Another couple of very interesting facts my research revealed was around SEO and Keywords! Who knew what a big part this would play?! It took me about 5 hours on a day to read about it and then implement SEO. Keyword research was more of an ongoing effort after I discovered how to do it. It took about an hours worth of effort for every blog post.

My research also lead me to blogging link ups! Something I honestly didn’t know existed. This was a brilliant way to promote my posts, make new connections and also discover new blogs. Promoting needs to be done everyday though and this takes about an hour a day as well!

Research is still consuming about an hour after work every day!

I also specifically looked into getting a new blog design as I wanted a more modern look. After a few weeks I found the design I wanted. I spent about 2 days getting everything together and finally had a new look for my blog! Woohooo!

Between the SEO and the new blog design I started getting many more offers for brand work! I basically stopped shopping because at this point I received a monthly shipment of plenty of clothing items!

This all meant that the amount of work on a blog post went up! I am now doing about 2 posts a week and spending about two hours for each post with just research and writing!

Grand Total Effort

23 hours a week

Blog Performance

After SEO and Keyword implementation my blog traffic nearly tripled! My traffic is more regular now and sustains much more than before without a post being published! But more posts definitely still get me more traffic!

My Happiness Quotient

I am very happy but I will say it’s getting to be hectic. My husband keeps asking me “do you still love it and are you having fun with it?” As long as my answer to those 2 questions is a yes I know I will keep going. So far the answer is still a resounding YES!

At the end I would say that yes, it’s hard, it’s not a cake walk by any means, but you can define your own success. You can set your own limits for blogging! How far do you want to go to make yourself happy while still having fun and loving what you do? It’s all up to you along with a little bit of planing, organization, time management and prioritization!

xoxo

I am currently using Yoast SEO plugin. It’s the easiest piece to do.

I love the pink pants with the camel trench 🙂

So interesting reading about your blogging journey too! I don’t think I have anywhere near enough time for blogging, I have two toddlers keeping me on my toes haha! Naptime is my blogging time, which means I don’t get a lot of it 🙂 I do take a photo every day (at most 2 minutes) as I blog what I wear so it’s interesting seeing how much time it takes you when you need to dress up just for photos!

Hope you have a lovely weekend ahead of you 🙂

Thanks for this lovely post and I must say I love what you’ve styled up today. It was great to read about your progress, aims and how you’ve achieved them. Your blog is obviously thriving and as long as you’re having fun that’s all that matters. I’ve been blogging for two years now while working full time and have different aims. I decided not to take on brands or collaborations as I like to have my own vioce and wear the clothes of my choice. It’s not the way the majority of bloggers go, but I do have other blogging friends who have kept their autonomy like this too. The blogging world is a great way to make friends and linking let’s you find so many new blogs – just like yours.

    Good luck!

Hi Anna, it’s really lovely to hear about your journey. I totally agree with you, having fun with it is the most important part and I love sharing my views with everyone. I am so glad that you found my blog, I hope you like it. I will check your out too 🙂 🙂

First of all – your outfit is super adorable! Second of all – it is so hard to find the right balance. I feel like I go in waves between my full-time job and blogging – sometimes I have more time to blog than others. I’ve learned to deal with that the best way I can. Sometimes that’s just taking a small break when it’s best for my sanity 🙂 But I always come back to it because I miss it!
