My husband and I love to travel. We recently went to Williamsburg, VA. I was very excited since it was going to be my first time there. Whenever I visit a city, I always try to find some of the best restaurants to visit. As I looked I came across the Fat Canary. Read on to know more!
When we planned our trip to Williamsburg I had no idea what to expect. Little did I know this restaurant would be the highlight of our vacation after family of course!
I wanted to make sure we got a reservation so I reserved a spot a month in advance. After looking at the Fat Canary website I was excited. The food looked amazing! My expectations were soaring!
When we got to the restaurant we were very taken by how pretty it looked. We walked in to see a rather large group waiting to be seated. We were early, so we decided to grab a drink at the bar. It took us about 15 minutes to get a drink. Not a great way to start! But we still had hope!
Our drinks, when they finally arrived, were delicious. I could see things improving 🙂
We were promptly seated at our reservation time. I liked that you could see the kitchen in full display from the seating area. The table was a tad bit tiny but still very cozy with a lovely candle light setting. Our waitress was very friendly and really good. I had called the restaurant a couple of days before to let them know I wanted to surprise my husband. They assured me they would take care of it but I wasn’t sure what they would do. I was also pleasantly surprised that when we got there they had a special menu with the message I had requested printed on it! My husband was ecstatic! Way to go Fat Canary, you really made his day!
As we were looking at the menu, it was clear that we were in trouble! We were spoilt for choice. Everything looked fantastic! Then the waitress talked about the specials for the day. The two that caught my attention were the oyster stew for the appetizer and the Halibut for the entrée. So I ordered them! My husband got the ribs for his appetizer and the pork chop for his entrée.
As our starters arrived, I couldn’t wait to try them. To my surprise the stew was fried oysters. I was a tad bit confused. But they looked so divine, I couldn’t wait! As I ate them I couldn’t help but feel like they were little drops of heaven! They were not too oily, the batter was delicious and the sauce was on point! My husband started with his ribs. The plating was pure perfection. It was also a sizable portion for the price. My husband loved them. I tried some and it just melted in my mouth! Divine!
However my curiosity got the better of me when it came to my oyster stew. When the waitress came to check on us I asked why the stew was only fried oysters 🙂 I know that sounds ridiculous but I was so confused. She apologized and said I actually got the fried oysters. She then offered to get me a cup of the stew! I obviously said yes!
The oyster stew was amazing. Creamy, with plenty of delicious oysters and finished off with bacon bits and a biscuit. It wasn’t too heavy either. I loved it!
All in all the appetizers were delicious, good portion size and plated beautifully!
We were ready for dinner. As we sipped our wine and waited, we noticed that Fat Canary didn’t pack it’s restaurant. They kept the ambience very romantic with a low noise level. We liked that a lot. We also liked that they spaced out the appetizer and dinner just enough to make you hungry again 🙂
As she set dinner down in front of us we were excited. My halibut looked amazing. My husbands pork chop looked delicious. As I put the first bite into my mouth I knew it was simply perfect. The fish, the sauce and the veggies were all amazing. My husband was smiling ear to ear as he ate his pork chop too! I am usually very fussy about my pork chop. I like it juicy and many places overdo it a tad bit killing the juices. But as I tasted a piece of his chop, I immediately knew why he was so happy. The pork was cooked to perfection.
Dinner did not disappoint! We loved it!
We weren’t sure we could handle dessert. But when we saw Warm Spice Madeleines on the menu we had to try some. I love Madeleines and was eager to try it with ice cream and a butternut squash purée. The plating was perfect! As we took a spoonful – a little madeleine piece, some purée, some ice cream and a pecan, we realized how beautifully the flavors came together to make pure magic! I absolutely loved the dessert! One of the best I have had!
By now I am hoping your mouth is watering. It honestly should be! If you are ever in Williamsburg, the Fat Canary is a must visit! You won’t regret it!
