Culottes Trend Styled for Petites

The culottes trend is big this fall. I pondered over it a while, wondering what a petite girl like me would look like in it. Would it suit me? Maybe, Maybe not? I honestly wasn’t sure. Then I looked at all the runway shows from Saint Laurent to Gucci and culottes were strutting down the runway in all. Olivia Palermo has made it a streetstyle hit. But models tower over me and Olivia is 5ft 6. I was still not convinced until I tried on a pair and it worked! Read on to see 🙂

I walked into J.Crew a couple of weeks ago and little did I know I would walk out with a pair of culottes. After browsing the store the culottes color caught my eye, a lovely fall orange. I loved it! I picked it up to try on but wasn’t certain it would suit me. Once I pulled them up I was confused. How would I style it? It makes me look stunted! But then it hit me! They would work and here is how:

High Waisted

Culottes for petite girls need to be high-waisted! Period! This gives you the elongating effect your petite frame so badly needs especially with how flare they tend to be. This J.Crew pair was high-waisted and I accentuated that with a belt. Don’t forget to accentuate your waist. High waisted for the win I say!

Above the Ankle

Next, they need to hit at the perfect length around your ankle. It needs to be a couple of inches above to give the illusion of length. The perfect crop makes a world of difference. So if they don’t hit at the sweet spot then make sure to get them altered.

Heeled Pumps

The trio in the illusion of length is your shoes! Pick a pair of pointed toe heeled pumps. Make sure the vamp is low, that way your leg looks longer. I like pointed toe because they really make a huge difference in leg lengthening. If you use these 3 things – high waist, above the ankle and heeled pumps you’re going to rock the culottes!

Tuck It

Now for the finishing touches. It’s not enough to have a awesome pair of culottes and pumps, you also need to pair it with a top. So what do you do? In my opinion tucking in the top is key. This way your waist is accentuated, you don’t look like our outfit just swallowed you and you get a crisp, clean cut look. Having some detail on the top would also look great.

Bun It!

Finally, if you are going for a polished, refined look that most culottes tend to be great at, bun up the hair! This also helps with showing off your neck which also gives the illusion of lengthening. It’s about taking every single fake inch you can muster 🙂

You’ve actually rocked the culottes! I think petite girls look great with culottes, although yes! STYLING plays an important role. One can always opt for heels with culottes to look taller. 🙂

You look so pretty! It’s reall a cute color and clothing combo!!! I am 5’1 and I have trouble buying also being so short. I am 155pds so I have to be sure things flatter my body type. I also love colors. I am not a black on black girl. Too drab. Everything looks better in color! Thank you for the tips!
